West White Beach

West White Beach is the one stretch of proper white coral sand on Christmas Island, most of the coast being cliff or coarse rubble, and getting to it means a rough track and then a scramble down and through a field of large limestone boulders that takes a good half hour. The reward is a bay backed by cliff with nobody in it and clear water off the sand.

What you actually see

• The white coral sand - unusual on an island of cliff and rubble.
• The boulder scramble - the half hour through limestone blocks.
• The cliff backing - the wall closing the bay behind the beach.
• The clear water - the swimming off the sand when the sea allows.

When to go

May to November is the dry season and the track is passable. Swell closes the bay at times. The scramble is hot and best done early.

Honest expectations

The scramble is genuinely rough and not for anyone unsteady on their feet. The track needs four wheel drive. There is no shade on the sand and no facilities of any kind.
