Tai Jin House stands on the hill above Flying Fish Cove and was built as the residence of the island's Administrator, holding the best view on the island: the whole cove, the harbour and the sea beyond it. It is now used as a museum and gallery, with displays on the phosphate industry, the Chinese and Malay communities who worked it, and the island's natural history. The name means big man's house. The road up from the Cove is short and there is parking beside the house.

What you actually see

  • The view over the Cove - the harbour and settlement laid out below.
  • The museum displays - the phosphate industry and the island's communities.
  • The gallery - the exhibition space in the house.
  • The building - the former Administrator's residence itself.

When to go

May to November is the dry season. Opening hours are limited and worth confirming. Mornings are cooler on the hill.
