Colchagua Museum

The museum opened in 1995 to hold the collection of Carlos Cardoen, a Chilean arms manufacturer who built it over decades: fossils, pre-Columbian gold and ceramics, colonial silver, huaso equipment, wine-making tools, machinery and, added in 2010, a section on the San Jose mine rescue including the Fenix capsule. It is one of the largest private museums in South America and is professionally displayed. It has also been the subject of sustained controversy - over Cardoen's business, over provenance and export questions attached to parts of the collection, and over items that other institutions and countries have claimed. Visitors should know that argument exists.

What to look for

• A very large private collection - fossils to twentieth century machinery.
• Pre-Columbian gold and colonial silver - among the strongest sections.
• The San Jose rescue capsule - added after the 2010 mine rescue.
• A contested provenance record - claims and questions that remain live.

When to go

Year round; it is busy at weekends with Colchagua wine visitors. Two to three hours.

Things to know

The provenance disputes are real and not a footnote - some material has been the subject of formal claims. The museum is large and takes longer than expected. Entry is not cheap. Santa Cruz fills at weekends.
