Manda National Park lies on the Chari near Sarh in the south, wooded savanna and gallery forest along the river holding elephant, buffalo, roan and kob antelope, warthog and baboon, with hippo and crocodile in the water. It was gazetted in 1965 and, like most Chadian parks, went through a long period without management before recent efforts to restore patrols. It is the most accessible park in the south.

What you actually see

  • The Chari frontage - the river running along the park with hippo and crocodile.
  • The gallery forest - the wooded strip along the water.
  • The antelope - roan and kob across the savanna.
  • The accessibility - the easiest of the southern parks to reach.

When to go

December to April is the dry season when animals concentrate at water. The rains from June close the tracks. Early and late in the day are best.

Honest expectations

Wildlife numbers were badly reduced during years without management and sightings are thin. Facilities inside the park are essentially nonexistent. Guides and four-wheel drive are required.

Nearby

Sarh is nearby, and Lake Iro is east.
