Hadjer el Hamis

Between N'Djamena and Lake Chad, the flat Sahel suddenly produces exclamation marks: Hadjer el Hamis's granite towers - the 'elephant rocks' - rise sheer and rounded from the plain, remnant inselbergs whose smooth walls have drawn international climbers to open routes and whose profiles at sunset give central Chad its signature photograph. Villages at the rocks' feet host visits with tea and guiding custom, paths circle the towers for the non-vertical, and the drive itself - dunes beginning, camel herds crossing - previews the lake country beyond. It is the capital region's best day out, in either harness or sandals.

When to go

November to February for cool days and the clearest sunset light; climbers favour the same window. Combine with the Bol road or a lake approach where arrangements allow.

Practical notes

Visits run on village courtesy - fees and greetings first, photography by permission; climbing is self-organised sport on your own judgement and gear. Shade is scarce and the granite radiates - mornings and evenings are the hours.
