Morgan's Bluff is the limestone headland at the northern end of Andros, named after the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan, who is supposed to have used it as a base and to have left treasure in the cave beneath it. The treasure has never turned up, which has not slowed the story down. The bluff has a small harbour used by the freight boats and by the barges that carry fresh water from Andros to Nassau, since Andros holds much of the country's groundwater. There is a beach, a cave to explore with a torch, and the annual All Andros Crab Fest in June, which is one of the liveliest events on the island.

What you actually see

  • Morgan's Cave - the cave in the bluff, entered with a torch.
  • The bluff and harbour - the headland and its working port.
  • The water barges - carrying Andros groundwater to Nassau.
  • Crab Fest - the June festival built around the island's land crabs.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. Crab Fest is in June and is the busiest weekend of the Andros year. Land crab season runs in the summer, when they migrate in numbers and are caught at night.

Honest expectations

There is little infrastructure and the cave is undeveloped, with no lighting and a slippery floor; take a torch. Sandflies at dusk are severe. The treasure story is folklore with nothing behind it. Getting to North Andros means flying into San Andros and hiring a car, and the island's sections are not easily connected.

Nearby

Nicholls Town is twenty minutes; the blue holes are further south.
