Douguia

Douguia sits on the Chari north of N'Djamena where the river runs wide and shallow towards Lake Chad, and it is the nearest point to the capital where hippos can be seen with any reliability, watched from pirogues that go out from the bank in the morning. Waterbirds work the shallows and fishing villages line the shore. A small lodge has operated there for years as the capital's weekend escape. The Chari here is the boundary with Cameroon for part of its course, and pirogues work both banks as a matter of routine.

When to go

November to February is the cool season and the water is falling, concentrating the hippos. March to May is extremely hot. The rains from July raise the river.

Honest expectations

Hippos are dangerous and pirogues keep their distance, so views are not close. Facilities are one small lodge. Bilharzia is present in the river.
