EntryLocal arrangements

Mount Ngaoui stands on the Cameroon border in the Yadé massif in the far west, and at around 1,420 metres it is the highest ground in the Central African Republic. The country around it is high grassland and gallery forest, cooler and greener than most of CAR, with scattered settlements on the slopes. The climb itself is a walk rather than a technical ascent. The massif continues into Cameroon, and the same highland country runs some way beyond the border.

What you actually see

  • The summit - the highest ground in the country at around 1,420 metres.
  • The highland grassland - the open country of the western massif.
  • The gallery forest - the woodland along the watercourses.
  • The border position - the ridge shared with Cameroon.

When to go

December to March is the dry season and the only practical window. The wet season makes the roads impassable. Mornings are clearest for the view.

Honest expectations

Getting to the area is a long journey on poor roads and needs proper arrangements. There is no marked route and a local guide is essential. No facilities exist anywhere nearby.

Nearby

Lancrenon Falls is south, and Bouar is southeast.
