Getting thereOntario; road from Owen Sound, about 40 km, on the Bruce Peninsula
EntryFree beach; parking charged

Sauble runs about eleven kilometres of shallow sand on Lake Huron and is one of the longest freshwater beaches in the world, with water warm enough for comfortable swimming by July and sunsets that draw people to the shore every evening. In 2023 an Ontario court ruled on a long-running claim that a survey error in 1855 had wrongly excluded a stretch of the beach from Saugeen First Nation's reserve, and about two kilometres of the northern beach was recognised as belonging to the nation; that section is now managed by Saugeen with its own arrangements. Piping plovers, an endangered species, nest here and areas are fenced in season.

What you actually see

  • The eleven-kilometre shore - shallow warm water and a long sand beach.
  • The Saugeen section - about two kilometres returned to the First Nation in 2023.
  • The piping plovers - endangered birds nesting in fenced sections.
  • The sunsets - the evening ritual of the whole beach facing west.

When to go

June to September for warm water; July and August bring heavy crowds and full parking. Plover nesting closes sections from spring into summer.

Honest expectations

Parking is charged and fills early on hot days. Access rules differ between the municipal and Saugeen-managed sections, so signage should be read. Plover fencing closes parts of the beach.

Nearby

The Bruce Peninsula runs north; Owen Sound lies east.
