Peggy's Cove

Peggy's Point Lighthouse stands on a great apron of pale, glacier-scoured granite where the Atlantic surf breaks, and it is the image most people carry of the Nova Scotia coast: a simple white tower with a red top, the bald rounded rock, and a huddle of a fishing village behind. The lighthouse dates from 1915 and the boulders around it, dropped and polished by the last ice age, run down to a sea that can be glassy calm or violently rough. A boardwalk and viewing area let you take it in, and the village of a few dozen people still lands lobster from the little cove. It is close enough to Halifax to be busy, but the setting is genuinely striking, especially in low morning or evening light.

When to go

May to October for the mildest weather and open services; summer is busiest, so early morning or evening avoids both crowds and harsh midday light. The rocks are at their most dramatic in a swell but that is also when they are most dangerous.

Honest expectations

The black, wet rocks nearest the water are lethally slippery and waves have swept people off and drowned them; signs warn to stay off the dark rock, and this must be taken seriously. It is popular and tour buses arrive through the day, so it can feel crowded midday. The village itself is tiny with limited parking and facilities.

Halifax and its waterfront are 45 minutes away; the South Shore towns of Chester and Lunenburg lie further along the coast.
