Logone-Birni

Logone-Birni stands on the Logone river close to the Chad border, and it is one of the old Kotoko towns, whose people trace their descent to the Sao and who built in mud on a scale that survives here: the sultan's palace is a complex of thick-walled mud buildings, courtyards and passages so narrow and so interlinked that moving through it is genuinely disorienting, with rooms stacked and roofs used as walkways. The walls are shaped and buttressed rather than plain, and they are maintained by replastering. Parts of the palace are in use and parts have decayed. The town sits on the floodplain, which floods in the wet season and dries hard in the heat.

History

The name means Fort Logone, and the town was founded around 1700 by Prince Bruha as the capital of the Kotoko. The explorer Dixon Denham rode in on 23 January 1824 and described the high walls along the river and a main street as wide as Pall Mall, lined with large houses behind walled courtyards; the town has also been proposed as the birthplace of Abram Gannibal, 1696-1781, the Russian general who was Pushkin's great-grandfather, a view argued by Dieudonné Gnammankou in 1996 (Wikipedia, Logone-Birni).

When to go

November to February, the cool dry season; the floodplain is difficult in the wet months. Half a day. A guide is compulsory and permission from the sultanate is needed.
