Saga Beach

Lake Tanganyika holds nearly a fifth of the world's fresh water, and Saga Beach is where Burundi enjoys it: a golden strip northwest of Bujumbura where beach bars and clubs string the sand, volleyball runs all weekend, pirogues land the morning's catch, and the swimming - warm, clear, ocean-scaled - comes with mountain views instead of salt. Weekends are the institution: Bujumbura families and expats colonising the loungers, brochettes and grilled sangala moving from the kitchens, music till the light goes. Weekdays return the lake to a few swimmers and the fishermen.

When to go

June to September for dry-season brightness and the calmest water; weekend afternoons for the social peak, weekday mornings for near-solitude.

Honest expectations

Swim where people swim - the lake is generally safe here but currents and depth deserve local confirmation, and bilharzia caution applies to still edges regionally. Facilities are beach-club simple. Keep valuables managed in the weekend crowds.
