Rusizi National Park

Where the Rusizi River finishes its run from Lake Kivu, it fans into a delta at Lake Tanganyika's head - and the wetland is Burundi's most convenient wildlife theatre: boat circuits idle past hippo pods and crocodiles (the delta was long famous for a notorious giant named Gustave, now the stuff of legend), sitatunga antelope tiptoe the papyrus, and the bird list - pelicans, fish eagles, jacanas, migrant waders - fills binoculars within the first bend. The park sits practically on Bujumbura's doorstep, making it the classic half-day between the city's lakeside terraces and the upcountry hills.
