Tamu Kianggeh is the open-air market on the Kianggeh riverbank in the middle of Bandar Seri Begawan, where growers bring produce in from the districts: jungle vegetables, ferns, tropical fruit, fresh turmeric and ginger, dried fish, ambuyat starch and kuih. Sellers come from across the country and some still arrive by boat. Fridays and weekends are the fullest days.

What you actually see

  • The jungle produce - ferns, wild vegetables and forest fruit brought in from the districts.
  • The ambuyat starch - the sago flour the national dish is made from.
  • The kuih stalls - the local sweets sold through the morning.
  • The river frontage - the bank sellers still arrive at by boat.

When to go

Fridays and weekends are fullest. Mornings are when the produce is freshest and the market busiest. It runs most days but is quieter midweek.

Honest expectations

It is small compared to markets in the region and an hour or two covers it. Little English is spoken among the sellers. It gets very hot by mid-morning under the roofing.

Nearby

Kampong Ayer is west, and the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is southwest.
