Gadong Night Market

The night market at Gadong is where Bruneians eat out in the evenings, a covered row of stalls turning out satay, grilled fish, ayam penyet, roti, nasi katok wrapped in paper, kuih and drinks, at prices that have stayed low. It gets going in the late afternoon and runs into the night. Nasi katok, rice with fried chicken and sambal for a dollar or two, is the thing to get. Gadong itself is the country's main shopping district, and the market sits behind the malls rather than apart from them.

When to go

Late afternoon into the night, every day. It is busiest after evening prayers. Ramadan changes the hours considerably.

Honest expectations

Seating is limited and most people take food away. It is covered but hot and crowded. Alcohol is not sold anywhere in Brunei.
