Muara Beach runs along the northeastern tip of Brunei near the country's main container port, a stretch of pale sand backed by casuarina with picnic shelters, changing facilities and a children's play area. Ships waiting for the port are visible offshore. It is a public beach in the ordinary sense, used by families at weekends and empty on weekdays, with the South China Sea in front of it. Muara town itself is small, and the port rather than the beach is what the settlement exists for.

What you actually see

  • The casuarina backing - the trees running along the back of the sand.
  • The shelters - the picnic and changing facilities along the beach.
  • The shipping - vessels waiting offshore for the container port.
  • The open sea - the South China Sea in front of the shore.

When to go

Year round. Weekends bring families and weekdays are quiet. Monsoon swell from around November to February makes the water rough.

Honest expectations

The port is close and shipping dominates the view. Litter after busy weekends is a problem. Currents can be strong and there is no lifeguard.

Nearby

Serasa Beach is south, and Bandar Seri Begawan is southwest.
