Sage Mountain National Park

Tortola's spine peaks at Sage Mountain - 523 metres, the territory's roof - where the islands' first national park (established 1964 on land bought from farmers as the conservation movement's local landmark) keeps a pocket of moist forest the drier coasts never knew: mahogany and bulletwood over tree ferns, hummingbirds working the heliconias, and trails looping the summit to lookouts that lay the whole sailing chart below - Jost, the channels, Virgin Gorda's mass, on clear days the outer cays. History

The national park was established in 1964, the first in the British Virgin Islands, to protect the last forests and watershed around the 523-metre summit of Mount Sage, the highest point in the Virgin Islands.
