The Copper Mine Ruins

Virgin Gorda's southeastern point stages the territory's most improbable silhouette: a Cornish engine house and chimney - built in the 1830s-40s when Cornish miners worked the copper lode here, shipping ore and homesickness in equal tonnage - standing in cut-stone defiance on a headland the Atlantic batters below. The mine's shafts ran under the sea itself; the ruins now anchor a national park site where interpretation tells the venture's hard arithmetic, waves detonate on the point's boulders, and the sunset angle turns industrial archaeology into the islands' moodiest photograph.
