Weris Megaliths

Around the village of Weris stands the only significant group of megalithic monuments in Belgium: two large dolmens of local puddingstone, a number of menhirs standing singly or in short alignments, and further stones in the surrounding fields and woods, dating from around 3000 BC and aligned on a north-east to south-west axis over several kilometres. The stone used is a distinctive conglomerate quarried nearby. A marked walking and cycling route links the main monuments, and a small museum in the village explains the excavation and the landscape context. The monuments sit in ordinary farmland with no fencing or interpretation on site, which is either an advantage or a frustration depending on the visitor.

April to October for the walking route. Half a day. The museum has limited hours and closes in winter. The stones are accessible at all times and free.

The monuments are modest by British or Breton standards and visitors who know those will find them small. There is no interpretation at the stones themselves. The museum has short hours. The route crosses farmland and can be muddy.
