Convento da Penha

The convent sits on a granite outcrop of about a hundred and fifty-four metres directly above Vila Velha, founded in 1558 by the Franciscan Frei Pedro Palacios and one of the oldest religious houses in Brazil. The white church at the top is visible from most of the Vitoria bay area, and the view from its terrace covers the bay, the port and the islands. The main pilgrimage falls on the Monday after Easter, when tens of thousands walk up the ramp; some make the last stretch on their knees, which is a long-standing part of the devotion. Inside are painted panels and the small chapel Palacios is said to have built first. The climb is the visit - the ramp is steep, paved and fully exposed to the sun.

Things to know

The ramp is steep and there is no shade on it - do it early. During the Easter pilgrimage the whole hill is closed to vehicles and packed. The interior is small. Dress codes apply.
