Norway in Seven Slow Days

Bergen, one great fjord and one great hike - the week that shows Norway properly instead of through a windscreen.

Norway punishes ambition: the map looks small, the driving hours are not, and a week that tries to see everything sees mostly tunnels. The week that works picks one fjord, one hike and one city - and lets the boats do the moving.

Days 1-2: Bergen, gateway done right

Start in the rain capital with the best-dressed weather in Europe. Bergen's wooden Bryggen wharf, the funicular up Floyen for the seven-mountains view, and the fish market for a salmon lunch on the harbour - the city earns two unhurried days, and its light rail makes the airport arrival painless. Evening tip: the neighbourhood streets behind Bryggen out-charm the postcard front.

Days 3-4: the fjord chapter

From Bergen, the classic Norway in a Nutshell corridor - mountain railway, fjord boat, hairpin bus - delivers the scenery without a steering wheel. Push further to Geirangerfjord if the extra travel day is acceptable: the S-curved fjord with farms clinging to ledges is the country's signature view, and the ferry through it doubles as the sightseeing. Sleep at fjord level once; morning stillness on the water is the whole point of coming.

Days 5-6: the hike decision

Norway's famous hikes are commitments, so choose one honestly. Preikestolen, the flat-topped pulpit over Lysefjord, is the achievable icon - a half-day round trip with a vertigo finale. Trolltunga, the rock tongue over a lake far below, is the harder trophy: a long, serious mountain day for fit, equipped hikers in season only. Pick by fitness, not by photograph, and check conditions - the hiking kit is the minimum, not the ideal.

Day 7: the exhale

Return via Bergen or Stavanger with a margin day - fjord weather spends margins for you. Spend whatever remains on a kayak hour, a stave church, or cinnamon buns eaten somewhere unreasonable and scenic.

The Lofoten alternative

Swap the whole southern plan for the Lofoten Islands if drama-per-kilometre is the metric: fly to the arctic archipelago and spend the full week among fishing villages and wall-steep peaks. It is a second Norway trip disguised as a first - and pairs with our fjord comparison for the bigger picture.

The practical bit

Cards everywhere, tipping nowhere, supermarket picnics as fiscal policy - the good-to-know page explains the pleasant shocks. Layers beat forecasts: the cold-weather kit applies even in July above the treeline, and a dry bag keeps ferry-deck photography guilt-free.
