Lakes That Steal the Show
Six lakes that upstage everything around them - Bled, Moraine, Atitlan, Titicaca, Plitvice and Ha Long's drowned mountains.

Mountains get the anthems, coasts get the postcards - but sometimes a lake walks in and steals the entire show. Six pieces of standing water that headline whole countries, linked to our full pages.
1. Lake Bled, Slovenia
An alpine lake, a tear-drop island, a church on the island, a castle on the cliff above: Bled is almost suspiciously complete. Walk the shore loop, ring the church bell for a wish, and try kremsnica cream cake - then slip away to wilder Bohinj twenty minutes on when the crowds thicken.
2. Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, Canada
Glacier flour turns these Rockies lakes a turquoise that cameras get accused of faking. Moraine and Louise are five-star famous - access is now by shuttle in season, booked ahead - but stand at Moraine's rockpile at dawn and cynicism dissolves entirely.
3. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
A caldera lake ringed by three volcanoes and a necklace of Maya villages, each with its own character and boat dock. Atitlan rewards slowness: village-hop by lancha, learn some Spanish on its famously cheap courses, and watch the volcanoes go pink at dusk.
4. Lake Titicaca, Peru and Bolivia
Water at nearly four kilometres of altitude, holding floating reed islands, ancient terraced isles and two countries' founding myths. Visit from Peru's side for the Uros islands and homestays on Amantani, or Bolivia's Isla del Sol for Inca ruins and ridge walks over impossibly blue water. Acclimatise first - our Peru notes explain.
5. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia
Sixteen lakes braided together by waterfalls over mineral terraces that grow and change like living things. Plitvice earned its place on both our waterfall and lake lists - water this clear over travertine this bright looks engineered, and is entirely natural.
6. Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Technically the sea - but Ha Long behaves like a lake: still green water threading between thousands of limestone towers, best absorbed slowly from the deck of an overnight boat. Choose mid-range or better cruises; the difference between magic and disappointment here is largely the operator.
The practical bit
Lake trips are layered trips - mornings glassy and cold, afternoons bright, evenings cool; the hiking kit plus a polarising filter (it cuts glare and doubles the colour) covers the photography half.
