Elbow Beach

Elbow Beach runs along the south shore in Paget, close enough to Hamilton to be the city's beach, with a public section at one end and hotel frontage along the rest. The wreck of the Pollockshields, a steamer that went aground in a hurricane in 1915, lies in shallow water a short swim out and is snorkelled from the beach. The sand is pink like the rest of the south shore and the beach is wide.

Background

The beach lies on the Atlantic coast of Paget Parish at 60 South Shore Road and ranks among the most popular beaches on Bermuda's main island. The Elbow Beach Hotel owns part of the sand for the use of its guests, and the rest is open to the public. The pink colour comes from tiny particles of crushed coral mixed into white sand. The water here is often calmer than at nearby Horseshoe Bay. The beach appeared in an episode of The Sopranos.

When to go

May to October is the swimming season. The wreck needs calm water for snorkelling. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Good to know

Much of the beach is hotel frontage and the public section is at one end. Access from the road involves a walk down and back up. Surf on this shore can be strong.
