Tondol Beach

Tondol is often called the Boracay of the north, which oversells the resort side and undersells the water. The beach is a white-sand strip on Anda island at the eastern end of the Bolinao peninsula, and what makes it unusual is the shelf: the seabed stays ankle- to knee-deep for several hundred metres out, so at low tide visitors walk far offshore across ribbed sand with the shoreline shrinking behind them, and boats have to wait for the tide to come in. Two small islets sit within wading or short-boat distance and are the standard excursion. On land the setup is simple - nipa cottages for rent by the day, grilled fish and halo-halo from the stalls, families camped under the trees - with no hotel strip and no nightlife. Weekends and Holy Week bring big domestic crowds; midweek the sandbar is close to empty.

When to go

November to May, timed around low tide for the sandbar walk; check tide tables before committing to a day. Weekdays are far quieter.

Things to know

Facilities are basic - cottages, stalls, simple toilets - and litter after busy weekends is a real complaint. The shallow shelf means swimming proper requires walking out. Anda is a long drive from Manila.

Bolinao's caves, Patar Beach and Cape Bolinao lighthouse are on the peninsula's far side, about an hour away.
