Nivelles Collegiate Church

The collegiate church of Sainte-Gertrude at Nivelles was consecrated in 1046 and is among the most important Ottonian Romanesque buildings in the Low Countries: a very large church with a choir at each end, an eastern and a western one, the western choir preceded by a massive block with a tower, an arrangement typical of imperial churches of the period and rare this far west. It was badly damaged by bombing in 1940 and rebuilt over three decades in a restoration that removed later accretions and returned it to its Romanesque form, which is why the interior reads so plainly. Beneath are archaeological remains of five earlier churches on the site, reached on guided tours, along with the shrine of Saint Gertrude.

What you actually see

• Two opposed choirs - an eastern and a western sanctuary in one church.
• The western block and tower - the imperial arrangement at the west end.
• Underground remains of five churches - the earlier buildings beneath.
• Plain Romanesque interior - the restoration that stripped later work.

When to go

Year round. One to two hours. Crypt and tower tours run at set times and are the way to see the archaeology. It closes for services. Weekday afternoons are quiet.

Honest expectations

The interior is plain to the point of bare after the restoration, and the wartime rebuilding means much is modern fabric. Crypt access is by guided tour only, at limited times, usually in French. Nivelles has little else.
