Risang Waterfall

Risang is a stream in the hills near Khagrachhari that comes down a long smooth slab of rock rather than dropping vertically, so the water slides rather than falls, and the slab has become a natural slide that visitors use, sitting in the flow and going down into the pool at the bottom. The name is Marma and refers to the sound. Reaching it means a walk off the road and then a long flight of steps down into the valley, with the return being the harder half. Flow is strongest in and after the monsoon and much reduced in the dry months. It is one of the standard stops on a Khagrachhari trip along with Alutila, and it is busy at weekends.

• Monsoon flow - the water at its strongest in the wet season.

When to go

July to October for the water; the dry season leaves little. Half a day. The steps down and back are a serious climb. Weekends are crowded and the slide queues.

Honest expectations

The rock is slippery and the slide causes injuries; it is not supervised. The climb back up the steps is hard work in humidity. Flow is poor in the dry season. Hill tracts permit rules apply to foreigners.
