Fox Hill

Fox Hill grew in the early nineteenth century as a settlement of free Black families and, after 1834, of freed people, on a rise east of the town, and it kept a distinct identity as Nassau grew around it. Its best-known tradition is Fox Hill Day, celebrated on the second Tuesday of August rather than on the national Emancipation Day, because news of emancipation is said to have reached the village a week late. The old churches and the village green remain the centre of it.

When to go

Fox Hill Day, the second Tuesday of August, is the reason to time a visit. November to April is the comfortable season otherwise. The rest of the year it is a quiet residential district.

Before you go

Outside Fox Hill Day there is little to see beyond churches and streets; the interest is historical rather than visual. It is a residential neighbourhood, not an attraction. There is no visitor centre or interpretation.

Nearby

Central Nassau is west, and the eastern beaches are on the coast beyond.
