EntrySmall charge

The Leutascher Ache cuts a narrow gorge on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria, and unlike the older Austrian klammen with their timber galleries, the route here is a steel and grating walkway suspended inside the slot, built in stages from 2006 with a bridge across the mouth and a viewing platform out over the water. The Klammgeist, a water spirit invented for the site, is the theme threaded along it with boards and figures, which is aimed squarely at children. The full route runs from the Bavarian side near Mittenwald through to the Tyrolean end at Leutasch, taking a couple of hours; shorter sections can be done from either end. Because the walkway is grating, the water is visible directly below your feet the whole way.

What you actually see

  • A suspended steel walkway - grating hung inside the slot with water below your feet.
  • A cross-border route - running from Mittenwald in Bavaria to Leutasch in Tyrol.
  • A viewing platform - out over the water at the gorge mouth.
  • The Klammgeist theme - the water spirit story boards along the route for children.

When to go

May to October; the walkway closes in winter. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Closed for the winter and after storm damage. The grating floor is not for anyone uneasy about seeing straight down. The full route is one-way; plan the return or the bus.

Nearby

Mittenwald is over the border; Seefeld is east.
