Bergisel Ski Jump

There has been a ski jump on the Bergisel since 1930 and it hosted the Olympics in 1964 and 1976, but the structure standing now is Zaha Hadid's, opened in 2002 after the old jump was condemned - a concrete and steel tower of about fifty metres carrying the inrun, with a café and viewing platform cantilevered at the top, resolving the usual separation of tower and ramp into one continuous form. It is a working competition venue and hosts a leg of the Four Hills Tournament each January, when the arena fills with some twenty thousand people. Outside events a funicular and lift take visitors to the top for the view over Innsbruck and the Nordkette. The hill below carries the Tyrolean memorial to the 1809 rebellion led by Andreas Hofer.

Honest expectations

Competition and training days close the tower to visitors. It is a single structure - two hours is generous. The lift queues in summer. Bad weather closes the platform.
