The Academy of Sciences is Riga's one Stalinist high-rise, a stepped 1950s tower locals nicknamed Stalin's Birthday Cake, close cousin to the same era's skyscrapers in Moscow and Warsaw. Its upper terrace opens a wide view over the old town spires, the Central Market hangars and the Daugava.
