Tahune AirWalk

The Tahune AirWalk runs about six hundred metres of steel walkway through and above the forest at the meeting of the Huon and Picton rivers, with a cantilevered section projecting out at around fifty metres above the river. Beneath it grow eucalypts, myrtle and stands of huon pine along the riverbanks. In January 2019 the Riveaux Road fire burned through the reserve, destroying buildings and much of the surrounding forest; the walkway itself largely survived and the site reopened, with the fire's effects and the forest's regeneration now part of what visitors see. Swinging bridges cross the river below, and short walks follow the banks.

What to look for

• The cantilever - the projecting section fifty metres above the river junction.
• The canopy walkway - six hundred metres of steel spans through the forest.
• The fire regeneration - forest recovering from the 2019 Riveaux Road fire.
• The swinging bridges - suspension crossings over the Huon and Picton.

When to go

October to April for the mildest weather; winter is cold and wet and the access road can be difficult. The site has had periods of closure since the fire and following operator changes, so checking before travelling matters.

Things to know

The 2019 fire changed the setting substantially and burnt forest is visible throughout, which surprises visitors expecting untouched rainforest. Entry is charged, the walk takes under an hour, and the access road includes unsealed sections.
