The Larapinta Trail follows the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges for two hundred and twenty-three kilometres, divided into twelve sections that run between trailheads with water tanks, so it can be walked end to end over two to three weeks or in individual sections of one to three days. The route climbs ridges, drops into gorges and crosses open spinifex country, with the finish at Mount Sonder, 1,380 metres, usually walked overnight to reach the summit for sunrise. Section highlights include Counts Point, Brinkley Bluff and the Ormiston Pound circuit. Water is provided at trailheads by tank, and food drops or shuttle support are standard for through-walkers.

What you actually see

  • The ridge walking - long sections along the crest of the ranges.
  • Mount Sonder - the western end, climbed overnight for sunrise.
  • The gorges - Ormiston, Serpentine and others crossed by the route.
  • The desert night sky - exceptional stars from the ridge campsites.

When to go

May to August; the trail is dangerous in summer, when temperatures exceed forty degrees and parts are effectively closed. Even in winter, days are warm and nights can drop below freezing. Water tanks are checked but can run low late in the season.

Honest expectations

This is a serious desert walk with rough footing, long dry stretches and heavy packs. Water must be carried between tanks, and tank levels should be checked before setting out. Shuttle transfers are needed for section walking and cost adds up.

Nearby

Alice Springs is the eastern trailhead; the West MacDonnell gorges lie along the route.
