Ongamira is a broad valley in the northern Sierras Chicas where wind and water have carved soft ochre and red sandstone into cliffs, hollows and shallow caves, with the Sierra de Ongamira rising behind and grassland running away below. The caves were occupied for thousands of years and hold archaeological deposits and traces of pigment, and later became associated with the resistance of the Comechingones people to Spanish settlement, a history recalled in local memorials. Today a private reserve manages access, with walking trails to the main formations, viewpoints along the cliff line and a monument on a hill above. The Ansenuza and Uritorco areas are close, and the valley makes an easy addition to a stay in Capilla del Monte.

What you actually see

  • The ochre cliffs - eroded sandstone walls and hollows across the valley.
  • The caves - shallow shelters with long histories of human use.
  • The valley trails - marked paths and viewpoints along the escarpment.
  • The grassland setting - open sierra country beneath the rock.

When to go

Year-round; spring and autumn are ideal, summer is hot with afternoon storms, and winter mornings can be frosty but clear. Late afternoon light brings out the strongest colour in the rock. Trails close in storms.

Honest expectations

The archaeological content is largely interpretive, with little visible to an untrained eye. Access is through a private reserve with an entrance fee and set hours. The last stretch of road is unpaved and rough after rain.

Nearby

Capilla del Monte and Uritorco lie west; Cerro Colorado is far to the northeast.
