Museo Rocsen

The Museo Rocsen was founded by the French-born Juan Santiago Bouchon, who set out to build a museum without a single theme, on the principle that everything human beings have made deserves a place. The result, near the village of Nono in Traslasierra, is a building whose facade carries around fifty stone statues of figures from world history and religion, and whose interior holds tens of thousands of objects: fossils and minerals, indigenous artefacts, mummies, motorcycles, typewriters, telephones, musical instruments, religious art, farm tools, taxidermy and cases of insects, arranged in dense rooms with handwritten labels. It is idiosyncratic, overwhelming and entirely unlike an ordinary museum, and it has become one of the most visited attractions in the valley.

What you actually see

When to go

Year-round; the museum is indoors and works well on a hot or rainy day. Summer afternoons are busiest with holidaymakers from Mina Clavero. Allow more time than expected, as the density of objects slows everyone down.

Honest expectations

The presentation is deliberately old-fashioned, crowded and lightly labelled, which some visitors find charming and others chaotic. There is little curation or context. The building is large, and covering it properly is tiring.
