Edough Massif

The Edough rises directly behind Annaba to just over a thousand metres, an old crystalline massif carrying cork oak and zeen oak forest with pockets of relict woodland, and its height and position on the coast give it rain and cloud that make it green when the plain below is burnt. The road climbs to Seraidi, a village on the ridge at around eight hundred metres that has been a hill resort since the colonial period, with a terrace looking down on Annaba, the Gulf and the plain. Forest tracks continue along the massif to viewpoints and springs, and the northern slopes fall to a coast of small beaches around Chetaibi.

When to go

April to October; summer is much cooler here than on the coast, which is the point. Half a day from Annaba. The road up is winding and busy at weekends.

Things to know

The road is narrow and heavily used at weekends. Facilities in Seraidi are dated and limited. Forest fires have damaged parts of the massif. Walking routes are unmarked and best done with local advice.
