Mount Nyangani

Mount Nyangani reaches 2592 metres and is the highest ground in Zimbabwe, a broad granite dome rather than a peak, climbed in around two hours from the car park at its base on a path that is marked but rough. The summit plateau is open grassland and boulder, often in cloud, with views over the Eastern Highlands and into Mozambique when it clears. The mountain carries strong local spiritual associations and people have gone missing on it.

When to go

April to October is the dry season and the safest window. Cloud closes the summit frequently and rolls in fast. Early starts are advisable.

Honest expectations

Mist descends quickly and people have become lost and died on this mountain; a guide is advised and the register at the base should be signed. The path is rough and boggy in places. The mountain is regarded locally as spiritually significant and behaviour on it matters.
