Mount Nyangani

Mount Nyangani reaches 2592 metres and is the highest ground in Zimbabwe, a broad granite dome rather than a peak, climbed in around two hours from the car park at its base on a path that is marked but rough. The summit plateau is open grassland and boulder, often in cloud, with views over the Eastern Highlands and into Mozambique when it clears. The mountain carries strong local spiritual associations and people have gone missing on it.

Background

The mountain, formerly called Mount Inyangani, stands inside Nyanga National Park, in the district of the same name, about 110 kilometres north-northeast of Mutare. Its highest point is a small rock outcrop around 40 metres above a broad moor of rolling hills and plateau covering about 8 square kilometres, whose edges drop steeply east and west. Heath covers the top, evergreen forest grows on the wetter eastern slopes, and grassland covers the west side. Rainfall reaches around 2,200 millimetres a year, though May to August is often dry, and the last recorded snow fell in August 1935. The Nyamuziwa, Gairezi and Pungwe rivers all rise on the mountain.

When to go

April to October is the dry season and the safest window. Cloud closes the summit frequently and rolls in fast. Early starts are advisable.

What to expect

Mist descends quickly and people have become lost and died on this mountain; a guide is advised and the register at the base should be signed. The path is rough and boggy in places. The mountain is regarded locally as spiritually significant and behaviour on it matters.
