EntrySmall fee

The Kaombe river drops around seventy metres off the edge of the Muchinga escarpment at Kundalila, whose name means cooing dove, falling into a pool set among boulders with a view out over the plain below the escarpment. A steep footpath descends to the base in twenty minutes or so and the pool is used for swimming. The top of the falls has open rock to sit on. There is a campsite at the rim and nothing else.

What you actually see

  • The single drop - around seventy metres off the escarpment edge.
  • The pool - the boulder-set basin at the base, used for swimming.
  • The escarpment view - the plain stretching out below the falls.
  • The footpath - the steep twenty-minute descent to the base.

When to go

April to July has good volume after the rains and manageable paths. Late dry season reduces the flow. The path is slippery in the wet.

Honest expectations

The descent is steep and slippery and the return climb is hard work in heat. Facilities are a campsite and a caretaker. The flow drops considerably by October.

Nearby

Mutinondo is northeast, and Samfya is northwest.
