Trang An and Ninh Binh

The area around Ninh Binh, often called Ha Long Bay on land, is a landscape of towering limestone karst peaks rising sheer from flat green rice paddies and slow rivers, and its heart, the Trang An complex, is a World Heritage Site for both its scenery and its long human history. The classic experience is to be rowed in a small sampan through a maze of waterways that thread between the karst, passing into low natural cave tunnels where you duck beneath dripping rock before emerging into hidden valleys. Nearby, Tam Coc offers a similar river route through three caves amid the paddies, and the caves and temples of Bich Dong and the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, seat of Vietnam's first independent kings, lie close by. Climbing the hundreds of steps to the Mua Cave viewpoint gives the panoramic view of the river winding through the karst that has made the region famous.

When to go

The paddies are greenest and loveliest from late May to early July, turning gold at harvest; October to November is drier and cooler. The rowers are busiest in the middle of the day, so early starts are quieter. Boat trips run year-round but the scenery depends heavily on the paddy season.

Honest expectations

It has become very popular and the main boat routes can be crowded and a little processed, with rowers sometimes pressing for tips or to sell goods; agreeing terms and a fair tip up front helps. The paddy colour that makes photos so striking is seasonal, so timing matters. The Mua viewpoint climb is steep. Ninh Binh town itself is unremarkable, a base rather than a sight.
