Phat Diem Cathedral

Phat Diem was built between the 1870s and the 1890s by a Vietnamese priest who wanted a cathedral that read as local architecture. The result is a complex rather than a single church: a lake with a small island in front, a heavy bell tower of stacked stone with curved eaves, the long main church behind it carried on rows of ironwood columns, and several side chapels, one of them built almost entirely of carved limestone. The rooflines curl like those of a village communal house, the altars are gilded and lacquered in Vietnamese style, and the whole thing sits in flat delta country of rice, canals and reed beds.

What you actually see

• Phuong Dinh bell tower - the stone gatehouse tower, with a bronze bell and a massive stone slab inside.
• The main church - a long nave carried on ironwood columns, dim and gilded at the altar end.
• The stone chapel - a side chapel with walls, columns and tracery cut from limestone.
• The lake and forecourt - the reflecting pool with a statue on its island, framing the tower.

When to go

October to April avoids the worst of the heat and rain. Visiting works best outside mass times, usually mid-morning or afternoon on a weekday, since on Sundays and feast days the church belongs to the parish and touring around it is intrusive. Allow three hours including the drive from Ninh Binh, and dress modestly.

Honest expectations

It is a long, dull drive across the delta for a single site, and Kim Son has nothing else for visitors. The interiors are very dark and hard to photograph without a tripod, and the side chapels are often locked. Some of the stonework has been patched with cement. There are no guides in English on the spot.
