Muong Lo Valley

Muong Lo is the broad flat valley around Nghia Lo in Yen Bai, the second largest rice-growing basin in the north-west after Muong Thanh at Dien Bien, and it is the historic heartland of the Black Thai in Vietnam. Its cultural significance was recognised specifically in 2021, when UNESCO inscribed xoe Thai - the Thai circle dance, in which participants join hands and move in a ring at weddings, festivals and communal occasions - on its intangible heritage list, with Muong Lo among the areas named. Homestays in Thai stilt houses operate through the valley and the harvest turns it gold in late September.

Honest expectations

Xoe performances put on for visitors are not the same as the communal occasions. Homestays vary from family houses to built lodges. The valley is a stop on the way to Mu Cang Chai for most people. Roads are busy with lorries.
