Bac Son Valley

Bac Son is a flat-floored basin ringed by limestone karst, farmed in a patchwork of small rice plots by Tay and Nung villages, and it is photographed almost entirely from one place: Na Lay hill, reached by around twelve hundred steps from the road, from which the whole valley lays out as a mosaic. Because the plots are farmed by different households on slightly different schedules, the harvest comes in patches rather than all at once, so the valley reads as a mix of gold, green and cut stubble at the same time - which is the effect people come for. Bac Son also gives its name to a prehistoric culture identified in caves nearby.

Things to know

The climb is steep and hot and the steps are uneven. Timing the harvest is imprecise. The valley is a long drive from Hanoi on busy roads. There are few services in the valley.
