Joropo

Joropo is the music of the llanos and the closest thing Venezuela has to a national form: an ensemble of harp, four-stringed cuatro and maracas, sometimes with bandola instead of harp, playing in fast triple time under a sung line, with couples dancing a stamped and turning figure to it. It carries the cattle-working life of the plains in its lyrics and its rhythms, and it was inscribed by UNESCO in 2025.

When to go

Year round in llanos towns and venues. Festivals cluster in the dry season from December to April, when travel across the plains is possible. Local fiestas are when it is most alive.

Practical notes

The best performances are at local fiestas rather than staged shows, and finding them takes local knowledge. Tourist versions in city restaurants are much diminished. The plains where it belongs are hard to reach in the wet season.
