Moutya

Moutya developed among enslaved people of East African origin in the Seychelles and was danced at night around a fire, with a goatskin drum heated over the flames to tighten it, a call-and-response line sung in Creole and a slow circling movement between men and women. It was suppressed under both colonial and church authority for much of its history. UNESCO inscribed it on its Representative List of intangible heritage in 2021.

Hotel performances are shortened and staged rather than the practice as it exists in communities. Genuine gatherings are not scheduled for visitors and cannot be booked. The tradition remains fragile despite recognition.
