Canaima Lagoon

Before Angel Falls takes all the attention, Canaima's lagoon makes its own case: a tannin-dark sheet edged with pink-quartz sand, palm islets posed mid-water, and a rim of waterfalls - Hacha, Wadaima, Ucaima - pouring in a connected curtain while the table mountains stand behind in silhouette. The camp village on the shore is the staging post for the river run to Angel Falls, but the lagoon earns its own day: dugout crossings to the falls, the drenching walk along the ledge behind Sapo Falls' thundering curtain, and sunsets that arrange tepuis, palms and falling water into implausible postcards.

When to go

June to November, the rains, swell the falls to full voice and float the Angel Falls river trip; December to April thins the curtain but clears the skies. Either way, flights and weather negotiate daily.

What to expect

Canaima runs on package logistics - flights, camps and excursions bundled through operators, with prices to match the isolation; independent improvising is barely possible. The Sapo walk soaks everything - dry-bag the electronics. Operators on the ground advise most honestly.
