Adicora

Adícora is a small village on the windward side of the Paraguaná peninsula, a line of low painted houses along a beach that faces straight into the trade wind. That wind blows hard and steadily for much of the year, which turned the village into the mainland's kitesurfing and windsurfing centre, with schools and rental on the sand. Behind it the peninsula is desert, with cactus, salt flats and the cone of Cerro Santa Ana on the horizon.

What to look for

• The wind - steady trade winds making it a mainland kiting and windsurfing centre.
• The painted houses - the low coloured line of buildings along the front.
• The lagoon - a shallow flat-water area behind the village used for learning.
• The desert setting - cactus, salt flats and the Santa Ana cone inland.

When to go

December to June is the windy season, strongest between January and April. The wind drops in the autumn. It is hot and dry year round.

Practical notes

Wind is seasonal and the autumn months are often flat. The village is small with few facilities and limited food choice. The peninsula is very dry and the landscape is bare.
