Medanos de Coro

Venezuela's improbable desert sits where the Paraguana peninsula's isthmus meets the mainland: the Medanos de Coro pile golden dunes to some forty metres beside the Caribbean, marching with the trade winds so persistently that the road across needs regular rescue from the sand. Locals sled and board the slip-faces, camels stroll for photos, and sunset turns the field to sculpted amber while kite-flyers work the wind. Ten minutes away, colonial Coro - Venezuela's first capital and a UNESCO town of earthen architecture, caramel-coloured churches and cobbled lanes - completes a pairing of desert and heritage no other Caribbean coast offers.

When to go

December to April is dry and breeze-cooled; late afternoon is the golden hour for both dunes and photographs, with the heat off the sand. The wind is constant - contact-lens wearers take note.

The dunes are an easy, informal visit - hawkers and photo-camels concentrate at the entrance, and walking ten minutes buys solitude. Coro town's heritage fabric is beautiful but weather-worn - part of its poignancy.
