Nurata and the Kyzylkum Yurt Camps

The classic Uzbekistan route runs Khiva to Bukhara to Samarkand, and the Kyzylkum yurt camps are the pause in the middle that visitors remember best. Set on red desert sand near Lake Aidarkul, the camps put guests in felt yurts with mattresses on the floor, feed them plov around a fire, and bring out a musician with a dombra as the sky fills with stars. Camels wait for sunset rides over the dunes, and the lake - an accidental inland sea created by a dam release decades ago - offers a swim and fresh fish. The town of Nurata nearby holds a sacred spring full of fish and petroglyphs on the hills above.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal; the desert is hot in high summer and cold at night in winter, when many camps close. Spring adds green to the steppe and wildflowers. Nights are cool in every season - a warm layer is needed even after hot days.

Honest expectations

Yurt camps are simple by design: shared bathrooms, no electricity in the yurts at some camps, and mattresses rather than beds. Camel rides are short and touristic rather than an expedition. The lake shore is unattractive in places from grazing and litter, though the swimming is pleasant. It works best as one night on a longer Silk Road route rather than a destination on its own.
