Bahauddin Naqshband Complex
The shrine of the founder of the Naqshbandi Sufi order outside Bukhara, inscribed by UNESCO.

Bahauddin Naqshband, who died in 1389, founded the Sufi order that carries his name and which spread across Central Asia, Turkey, India and beyond, and his grave outside Bukhara became the centre of a complex that grew over the following centuries: a mosque, a khanaka, courtyards, a pool and a burial ground. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 2023 as a component of the Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor. Pilgrims come here in continuous numbers.

When to go
April to June and September to October are the comfortable months. Fridays bring the most pilgrims. Modest dress is required.
Good to know
This is an active shrine and photography of worshippers is not welcome. Much of the complex has been heavily rebuilt. It gets very busy on Fridays and holidays.

Bukhara is west, and Chor-Bakr is on the other side of the city.
