South Padre Island

South Padre is the southern tip of the longest barrier island in the world, most of which is undeveloped national seashore further north. Sea Turtle Inc. on the island rehabilitates injured turtles and runs the Kemp's ridley conservation programme - the species nests on this coast and was down to a few hundred nesting females before intervention. The island has a sand sculpture tradition with permanent and competition work, helped by sand that holds shape well. SpaceX operates Starbase at Boca Chica just south, and launches and static fires are visible and audible from the island, with road closures during operations. Spring break in March fills the island entirely.

March to May and September to November; avoid spring break unless that is the point. A full day.

Honest expectations

Spring break in March is overwhelming. Summer is very hot and humid. Launch operations close beach access roads to the south without much notice. Hurricane season affects late summer.
