Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is Oregon's postcard made real: a 620-foot ribbon of whitewater dropping in two tiers down a basalt wall of the Columbia River Gorge, with the arched Benson Bridge of 1914 spanning the gap between them at exactly the point a painter would have chosen. It is the state's most visited natural attraction, and the composition explains why - fern-hung cliffs, mist drifting over the bridge, and the stone Multnomah Falls Lodge of 1925 completing the scene at the base. The classic move is the short paved climb to the bridge for the face-full of spray, then the steeper 1.2-mile switchback trail to the top platform, where the creek slides over the lip with the gorge spread beyond. The falls anchor a whole waterfall corridor - Wahkeena, Latourell and their sisters pour off the same cliffs within a few miles.

When to go

Spring runoff gives the falls their full-throated best; autumn adds colour to the gorge, and winter cold snaps occasionally sculpt it in ice. Summer middays are the crush - come before 9am or toward evening.

Honest expectations

From late May to early September the I-84 parking lot requires a cheap timed permit booked online, and the permit buys permission, not a guaranteed space - transit and shuttles are the calmer play. The viewing areas are genuinely crowded most of the day; the climb to the top thins the company considerably.
